How do you get a playstation 2 controller to work for emulators on a PC?

I got a few emulators and games, but the turning sensitivity of using my keyboard is way too high it's hard to play with. So I would like to use a ps2 controller (or any controller)for them. Is this possible if I get a converter to USB? Also, if I can't do that, is there any other way to lower the sensitivity of turning for emulators like project 64? Plug-ins maybe? How do you get a playstation 2 controller to work for emulators on a PC?
wal-mart sells a device that has a USB port plug and on the other side it has 4 plugs for ps2, xbox, nintendo, something eles not sure. Go to your local wal-mart.
